In 2010, over 10,000 people were killed nationally in motor vehicle traffic crashes that involved at least one driver or motorcycle rider with a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of .08% or higher. In Californian, this deadly crime led to 791 deaths because someone failed to designate a sober driver.

"Deaths from drunk and drug-impaired driving are going down in California," said Christopher J. Murphy, Director of the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS). "But that still means that hundreds of our friends, family and co-workers are killed each year, along with tens of thousands who are seriously injured. Perris, CA - Officers from the Perris Police Department's DUI Enforcement Team will be deploying this weekend to stop and arrest impaired drivers in the department's ongoing traffic safety campaign.

"For those who don't care about their own safety or the safety of others, BEWARE - We're looking for you," said Sergeant Dan Lingo, Perris PD. "If we catch you behind the wheel of your car, truck or ride your motorcycle buzzed, you will go to jail this weekend."

Perris PD will be conducting another "Zero Tolerance" DUI Saturation Patrol on Friday February 10, 2012, targeting those who still don't heed the message to designate a sober driver before their celebrations begin. Funding for this program is though a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

"Over the course of the past three years, DUI collisions have claimed 11 lives and resulted in 331 injury crashes harming many of our friends and neighbors," said Sergeant Dan Lingo.

Statewide, overall traffic deaths declined by 23 percent, from 3,995 in 2007 to 3,081 in 2009. Total traffic fatalities are at their lowest levels in six decades. DUI deaths declined by 16 percent, from 1,132 in 2007 to 950 in 2009. Alcohol impaired deaths still make up the largest category of overall vehicle fatalities, with 31 percent of all deaths caused by a drunk driver.

"Everyone in California should be heartened with these declines," said Christopher J. Murphy, Director of the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS). "But as encouraging as this is, we can't let up on the efforts to encourage and support traffic safety. Please, help make your community safe; if you see a Drunk Driver - Call 9-1-1."

Perris - February 3, 2012

The Perris Police Department will conduct a sobriety and driver's license checkpoint on Friday, February 3, 2012 from 6:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m. in the city of Perris, where a significant number of DUI-related collisions and DUI arrests have occurred. Officers will screen drivers passing through the checkpoint for sobriety and for a valid driver's license. Drivers found to be under the influence of alcohol or other drugs will be arrested, and unlicensed drivers may be cited and have their cars towed.

"DUI arrests can be embarrassing and expensive, but they're easy to prevent," said Captain John Hill. "If you're drinking, hand your keys over to a designated sober driver, or call a taxi or sober friend for a ride home. Don't risk an arrest ---or worse, a serious injury or even death."

The purpose of the sobriety checkpoint is to reduce the number of traffic collisions related to intoxicated drivers and hit and run collisions. The checkpoint will serve as a reminder to use designated drivers and not drink and drive. Our message is simple: if we catch you drunk, you will be arrested.

It is the Perris Police Department's goal to continue providing public awareness on the dangers of drinking and driving, and the laws concerning driving without a driver's license. Motorists approaching a checkpoint will observe traffic signs, information and police officers advising that a checkpoint is ahead. Once diverted into a lane, motorists will be delayed a moment while an officer explains the purpose of the checkpoint.

Moreno Valley - January 13, 2012

The Moreno Valley Police Department will be conducting a specialized Motorcycle Safety Enforcement Operation on Friday, January 13 in an effort to continue lowering deaths and injuries. Extra officers will be on duty patrolling areas frequented by motorcyclists and where motorcycle crashes occur. Officers will be looking for drivers and riders who are under the influence of drugs or alcohol and cracking down on traffic violations made by motorcyclists as well as other vehicle drivers that can lead to motorcycle collisions, injuries and fatalities.

While motorcycle fatalities had been on the rise in California, increasing 175 percent in the last decade, from 204 killed in 1998 to 560 killed in 2008, the trend has changed. In 2009, California experienced a 29.6 percent reduction with 394 motorcyclists killed, and preliminary 2010 numbers indicate another 10 percent drop to 353 motorcyclists killed.

California collision data reveals that primary causes of motorcycle-involved crashes include speeding, unsafe turning and impairment due to alcohol and other drugs. The Moreno Valley Police Department is also reminding all motorists to always be alert and watch out for motorcycles, especially when turning and changing lanes.

Some of the reduction in riders killed can be attributed to fewer improperly licensed riders. In 2008, 62.7% of motorcycle operators killed under age 25 were not properly licensed. In 2009, that statistic fell to only 45.5%. Riders, young and old, are encouraged to be properly licensed and to seek training and safety information.

"The terrible trend of rising motorcyclist fatalities has been reversed, though there is more that everyone can do to save more lives. Riders and drivers need to respect each other and share the road," said California Office of Traffic Safety Director, Christopher J. Murphy.

Murrieta - December 30, 2011

A DUI/driver's license checkpoint is set for Murrieta tonight.

Between 7 p.m. Friday and 3 a.m. Saturday, the Murrieta Police Department will conduct the checkpoint at an undisclosed location.

Motorists approaching the checkpoint will see signs advising them that it is ahead, said Murrieta police Cpl. Jay Froboese, in a news release. Cars will be directed into a single lane, where they will be momentarily detained while an officer explains the purpose of the checkpoint, he said.

"Traffic volume permitting, all vehicles will be checked."

The checkpoint is being held in cooperation with the Riverside County Avoid the 30 campaign, and is completely funded by the State of California through the Office of Traffic Safety.

A checkpoint planned on Dec. 17 by the Murrieta Police Department was canceled due to rain.

"The goal of the Murrieta Police Department is to reduce traffic related fatalities, injuries, and collisions through enforcement and education programs as well as reduce Driving Under the Influence (DUI) involved collisions," Froboese said.

"Checkpoints placed on roads with identified DUI problems tend to help reduce the number of drinking drivers on the road, even though arrest totals do not rise dramatically.

"A major value of checkpoints is their psychological influences, based upon studies conducted by the California Highway Patrol."

"RUOK?" is the text message version of the often heard question, "Are you okay to drive?" If you have to ask someone this question, you already know the answer. You know they have had too much to drink or are showing signs of being "buzzed." You know that they are not okay to drive. Merely asking the question does not relieve you of the responsibility. You should call them a cab, take them home yourself, or offer your couch.

Approximately 30 DUI/ Driver's License Checkpoints, Multi Agency DUI Task Force deployments and roving DUI patrols are scheduled locally in partnership with law enforcement statewide and around the county during the Winter Holiday Anti-DUI Campaign. This checkpoint is completely funded by the State of California through the Office of Traffic Safety and the Riverside County Avoid the 30 Program.

Riverside, CA - The Riverside Police Department Traffic Unit will be conducting a DUI/Driver's License checkpoint on Friday, October 28, 2011, at an undisclosed location within the city limits between the hours of 6:00 p.m. and 12:00 a.m.

Officers will be contacting drivers passing through the checkpoint for signs of alcohol and/or drug impairment.

Officers will also check for proper licensing and will strive to delay motorists only momentarily.

A DUI/Driver's License Checkpoint is scheduled for September 2, 2011 within the city limits starting at 6:30 PM, in partnership with law enforcement nationwide during the Summer/Labor Day Campaign.

The crime of impaired driving is a serious one. In 2009 alone, 10,839 people died in crashes in which a driver or motorcycle rider was at or above the legal limit, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The age group with the highest percentage of alcohol-impaired-driving fatalities in motor vehicle traffic crashes was the 21-to-24 age group.

"All too often, innocent, law-abiding people suffer tragic consequences and the loss of loved ones due to this careless disregard for human life. Because we're committed to ending the carnage, we're intensifying enforcement during the crackdown. Sobriety checkpoints are planned for Temecula starting Friday, according to the Riverside County Sheriff's Department.

The end-of-summer "Avoid the 30" campaign -- named for the number of local police agencies involved -- will get under way at 6 p.m. Friday and continue to Sept. 5.

The patrols are part of a two-week crackdown on motorists driving under the influence of alcohol and committing other violations.

The effort is part of a national campaign called "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over," according to Riverside police Sgt. Skip Showalter, the Avoid coordinator.

Countywide anti-DUI operations will coincide with the California Highway Patrol's "Maximum Enforcement Period," which is set for Labor Day weekend.

During the MEP, 80 percent of the CHP's officers hit the streets to nab intoxicated motorists, speeders and other traffic violators.

"Weekend nights are particularly dangerous times for innocent victims of drunk drivers," said Riverside police Chief Sergio Diaz. "For that reason, during this operation, we will be deploying extraordinary numbers of Riverside Police Department officers to arrest impaired drivers during those hours. This operation is an integral part of the RPD's comprehensive strategy to make our streets and roads safer for all community members."

The Perris Police Department will conduct a sobriety and driver's license checkpoint on Saturday August 6, 2011 from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m., in the city of Perris, where a significant number of DUI-related collisions and DUI arrests have occurred. Officers will screen drivers passing through the checkpoint for sobriety and for a valid driver's license. Drivers found to be under the influence of alcohol or other drugs will be arrested, and unlicensed drivers may be cited and have their cars towed.
