San Mateo, CA - San Mateo Police Department will be conducting a DUI checkpoint on Friday, September 16th , 2011 on Fourth Avenue between the hours of 6:00 p.m. and 2:00 a.m. DUI checkpoints are a proven enforcement tool effective in reducing the number of persons killed and injured in alcohol involved crashes, as well as being a valuable means for heightening awareness of the dangers of impaired driving.
Officers will be checking drivers through the checkpoint for signs of alcohol and or drug impairments. Officers will strive to impact motorists only momentarily. If officers suspect that a driver has been drinking or is impaired, they will conduct a field sobriety test. If you fail, expect jail, vehicle storage fees, license suspension, insurance increases, along with fines, fees, DUI classes, other expenses that can exceed $10,000.
"Over the course of the past three years in this area, DUI collisions have claimed 2 lives and resulted in 24 injury crashes harming 30 of our friends and neighbors," said SMPD Traffic Sergeant Greg Jacobson.
Statewide, overall traffic deaths declined by 23 percent, from 3,995 in 2007 to 3,081 in 2009. Total traffic fatalities are at their lowest levels in six decades, when the federal government began compiling figures. DUI deaths declined by 16 percent, from 1,132 in 2007 to 950 in 2009, according to federal statistics. Alcohol impaired deaths still make up the largest category of overall vehicle fatalities in 2009, with 31 percent of all deaths caused by a drunk or impaired driver.

Pacifica - September 9, 2011
The Pacifica Police Department will be conducting a DUI/Drivers License checkpoint on this Friday, Sept. 9, at an undisclosed location within the city limits between the hours of 7 p.m. and 1 a.m.
Officers will be checking drivers through the checkpoint for signs of alcohol and/or drug impairments. Officers will check for proper licensing and will strive to impact motorists only momentarily. If officers suspect that a driver has been drinking or is impaired, they will conduct a field sobriety test. Those who fail the test should expect jail, vehicle storage fees, license suspension, insurance rate increases, along with fines, fees, DUI classes, and other expenses that can exceed $10,000.
"Collisions caused by drivers under the influence of alcohol and drugs continue to be a problem within the city of Pacifica. In an effort to reduce the number of collisions and injuries to our citizens, the Pacifica Police Department exercises a zero tolerance stance with DUI drivers," said Pacifica Police Sergeant Daniel Steidle in a press statement.

"Everyone in California should be heartened with these figures," said Christopher J. Murphy, Director of the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS), in a press release. "But as encouraging as this is, we can't let up on the efforts to encourage and support traffic safety. You can help make your community safe; if you see a drunk driver, call 9-1-1."
Funding for this and other DUI checkpoints are provided to Pacifica Police Department by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, targeting those who still don't heed the message to designate a sober driver.

Burlingame

The Burlingame police department is cracking down on drunk driving and kicks off the campaign tonight with a DUI/License checkpoint beginning at 6 p.m. in the northwest section of Burlingame.
Burlingame police join almost 10,000 police departments nationwide participating in the Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign occurring August 19 through September 5, coinciding with the Labor Day weekend.
"All too often, innocent, law-abiding people suffer tragic consequences and the loss of loved ones due to this careless disregard for human life," said Police Chief Ed Wood in a statement. "Because we're committed to ending the carnage, we're intensifying enforcement during the crackdown."
San Mateo County similarly will run DUI checkpoints and DUI task forces during the 18-day operation.
Impaired drivers face loss of driver licenses, jail time or mandatory use of ignition interlocks. They also risk heightened insurance rates and expensive legal fees.
"Our message is simple and unwavering," Wood said. "If we find you driving impaired, we will arrest you. No exceptions."
