he Oxnard Police Department Traffic Unit will conduct a DUI/drivers license checkpoint on Friday, March 23, 2012 at an undisclosed location within the city limits between the hours of 6 p.m. and 3 a.m. Checkpoints are located in areas that have the greatest opportunity for achieving drunk and drugged driving deterrence and provide the greatest level of safety for officers and the public. 

 
Officers will contact drivers passing through the checkpoint looking for signs of alcohol and/or drug impairment. Individuals caught driving impaired can expect jail, license suspension, and insurance increases, as well as fines, fees, DUI classes, court probation and other expenses that can exceed $10,000.
 
All too often, members of our community are senselessly injured or killed on local roadways by impaired drivers. "Over the course of the past year, DUI collisions have claimed one life and resulted in 171 wrecks injuring 86 of our friends and neighbors in Oxnard," said Senior Officer Jamie Brown of Oxnard PD.

Ventura, CA - The Ventura Police Department Traffic Unit will be conducting a DUI/Drivers License Checkpoint on Saturday February 11, 2012 at an undisclosed location within the city limits between the hours of 8:00 p.m. and 3:00 a.m.  DUI checkpoints are a proven enforcement tool effective in reducing the number of persons killed and injured in alcohol involved crashes. Research shows that crashes involving alcohol drop by an average of 20 percent when well-publicized checkpoints are conducted often enough.

Officers will be contacting drivers passing through the checkpoint for signs of alcohol and/or drug impairment.  Officers will also check for proper licensing and will strive to delay motorists only momentarily. Drivers caught driving impaired can expect jail, license suspension, and insurance increases, as well as fines, fees, DUI classes, other expenses that can exceed $10,000.

"Over the course of the past three years, DUI collisions have claimed 4 lives and resulted in 58 injury crashes harming 82 of our friends and neighbors," said Sgt. Ryan Weeks of the Ventura Police Department Traffic Unit. 

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), checkpoints have provided the most effective documented results of any of the DUI enforcement strategies, while also yielding considerable cost savings of $6 for every $1 spent.  Checkpoints are placed in locations that have the greatest opportunity for achieving drunk and drugged driving deterrence and provide the greatest safety for officers and the public.

"Deaths from drunk and drug-impaired driving are going down in California," said Christopher J. Murphy, Director of the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS).  "But that still means that hundreds of our friends, family and co-workers are killed each year, along with tens of thousands who are seriously injured. We must all continue to work together to bring an end to these tragedies.  If you see a Drunk Driver - Call 9-1-1."

Funding for this checkpoint is provided to The Ventura Police Department by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, targeting those who still don't heed the message to designate a sober driver.

Our goal is to combat alcohol and drug related crashes by utilizing checkpoints and by publicizing our efforts.  The checkpoint will be operated from 8:00 pm - 3:00 am.  Ventura PD is employing a zero tolerance policy: if you drive drunk, you will be stopped; if you're over the limit, you will be arrested.

Additionally, Ventura Police are also asking for the community's help, if you see an impaired driver on the road: Report Drunk Drivers - Call 9-1-1.

The Oxnard Police Department will be conducting a multi-location sobriety and driver's license checkpoint on Friday, August 19, 2011, from 6:00 P.M. to 02:00 A.M.  The checkpoint will be held within the City of Oxnard and is funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
 
The Oxnard Police Department is committed to improving traffic safety and reducing the number of alcohol related crashes to make our roadways and community safer.  We will continue to conduct DUI checkpoints, DUI saturation patrols, and DUI warrant operations this year.    
 
How to Report a Drunk Driver
 

1. Call 911 and tell them you wish to report a suspected drunk driver.  **You do not have to give your name.
2. Give a complete description of the vehicle, such as make, model, color and license plate number.
3. Give the exact location of the vehicle, including the name of the road, cross streets and the direction they're traveling.
4. Describe the manner in which the vehicle is being driven.
5. Do not try to stop the car or detain the driver.  Leave that to a law enforcement officer.

 
As a reminder, the fines, fees and attorney costs associated with a first time DUI conviction in Ventura County can reach over $10,000.  Driver's license suspension and an increase in vehicle insurance premiums are also potential consequences.
